The first Handbook on Standard Operating Procedures for PHC level nurses, developed within the Strengthening Nursing in Bosnia and Herzegovina project, was presented and handed to representatives of FBiH primary healthcare centres in Sarajevo on 25 October 2017.

The event that took place in Hotel Hills in Sarajevo was attended by 145 participants – managers and head nurses of FBiH primary health care centres and others guests, among whom are representatives of FBiH Nurse Association, RS Nurse Association, FBiH Public Health Institute, RS Public Health Institute, FBiH Agency for Healthcare Quality and Accreditation, Sarajevo Canton Health Insurance Fund, Swiss Red Cross, etc.

The Director of Cooperation of the Embassy of Switzerland in BiH Barbara Dätwyler Scheuer addressed the attendees and stressed the importance of the handbook for strenthening nursing and improving population health.

The Advisor to the Minister of Health of the FBiH Dragana Galic stressed the importance of nurse practice standardization in the FB&H and the fact that the need for that had arose a long ago.

Standardized and clearly defined operational procedures are one of basic tools for practice standardization and ensurance of high-quality and safe health services. The handbook with 46 standard operating procedures, developed within the project, is the first of its kind in BiH. The Working Group appointed by the Minister of Health of the FBiH Vjekoslav Mandic has been for more than a year preparing the handbook, with all the phases of the process led by nurses.

Thanks to the handbook, all the nurses in the FBiH will have assembled information on procedures relevant for their work available. This has for the first time enabled them to provide services in a standardized and consistent manner and improve the quality and efficiency of nursing care.
