One more round of clinical mentors training completed

Due to the great interest and need, additional training round was organized for clinical skills mentors at nursing studies. In this round, 15 more clinical skills mentors from seven public nursing faculties in BIH completed the training.

Mentors are nurses tasked to teach nursing students practical skills and knowledge and thus enable them to work with patients. They work with students in clinical skills cabinets at the faculty or in healthcare facilities.

Mentors are always selected among nurses with long work experience. However, in addition to professional nursing care knowledge, successful teaching requires knowledge about the process of adult learning and communication.

The training for mentors organized by the Strengthening Nursing in BIH Project introduces exactly these skills, enabling as efficient as possible knowledge transfer to students, future nurses, but also to other fellow mentors. The training consists of 34 teaching hours and includes the following:

1.  Adult education, learning styles and processes
2. Adult education methods
3. Visualization and presentation
4. Communication as a method in adult education
5. The importance and methods of evaluation in adult education
6. Clinical mentor
7. Gender

In total, 35 mentors have completed the training (during the first training round in 2019 and the recent second round), i.e. 18% of all nurses engaged as mentors.

All the video and e-material used in training will be delivered to the faculties and thus become available to other clinical skills mentors, facilitating those who had the opportunity to complete the training to transfer knowledge to their fellow mentors.
